Day 2

Today I concentrated on removing everything from the front of the engine.. Tommorow the engine will go up on the engine stand and I wanted to make it lighter, if possible.

I'm ready...

First thing, today is to remove the oil filler. I started by removing the two breather hoses that go to the passenger side cam cover.
Loading...
I then removed the two bolts securing the oil filler.
Loading...
Then the hose at neck of the filler spout. I don't remember right this second where it goes, luckily it is labeled.
Loading...
Next, I wanted to remove the housing the t-stat is mounted in - I don't know the correct name for this part. First I removed the fuel line that connects the front fuel pressure damper to the passenger side fuel rail.

Line removed in this picture.

Next I removed the large house to the left of the t-stat cover.
Loading...
Then I removed the front fuel pressure damper.
Loading...
Then I removed the t-stat cover so that I'd have a little better accessibility. The t-stat cover is so much easier to remove when it isn't in the car!
Loading...
Then I removed the t-stat.
Loading...
I can't remember what this was for and my note is gibberish.
Loading...
I detached the bolt-down for this cable (I think it is the driver's side knock sensor)
Loading...
I then removed the plate that retains the spark plug wires to the front of the engine (where they cross to go to the distributor caps).
Loading...
Loading...
Loading...
I had to disconnect the wires from the cam covers as well.
Loading...
Here's the front of the engine with the wires removed.
Loading...
Loading...
Here I removed the Vacuum-operated switch valve (tune-intake flap). Whatever that is.
Loading...
Driver's side engine cover off!
Loading...
Removed the distributor cap.
Loading...
Loading...
Passenger side engine cover off!
Loading...
Next I unbolted the smog pump. But I was unable to get it off - later on, Jay Kempf told me it has to be pried off, which I did.
Loading...
I'm not absolutely sure what this plug is for, but I did label both ends.
Loading...
Disconnected a very small wire that goes into the smog pump.
Loading...
Since I was unable to remove the smog pump before, I attempt to remove the bracket it is attached to. Also without success.
Loading...
After failing with the smog pump, I moved to the other side and successfully removed the alternator.
Loading...
Removed the wires from the alternator.
Loading...
Alternator removed.
Loading...
Sure looks lonely..
Loading...
There was a small wire going through the lower engine cover. I believe it is for the timing belt tensioner.
Loading...
Removed the other end of the wire from the timing belt tensioner.
Loading...
Lower engine cover removed. I cut the A/C compressor belt because A) I'm lazy and B) I wasn't going to re-use it anyway.
Loading...
Removed the thing the t-stat mounts into.. Anyone know what this thing is actually called?
